Most people hold a belief that the entertainment industry is the richest industry in the world, but only a few know that it’s not true. Yes, the entertainment sure is glitzy and glamorous, and is also massively flourishing. However, if we are talking about the highest paying industries, then sports would definitely top the list.

The sports industry, especially, is quite lucrative. The highest paid sports stars are regarded as some of the richest people in the world. Annually, several lists are published to evaluate the worth of each of these top players, in monetary terms. In today’s date, there are various leagues that take place in every sport, and these leagues pay bizarre amounts to coax the players to participate and are growing at an increasing rate in the ever-changing sports industry.

Keeping in mind that all sports pay differently, depending upon their parent organisations and how they operate, it is, indeed, a difficult task to construct a list of the richest sports in the world. Nevertheless, in this post’ we’d like to present to you a rough list of the world’s highest paying sports.

“Mile-a-minute” Murphy was the nickname earned by Charles Minthorn Murphy, the first cyclist to cover a mile in less than a minute. Cycling is considered as one of the most active sport in the world. There are several cycling tournaments, some of which are considered to fall under the category of the highest paying events around the world. Apart from the large sums of money that the cyclists make as a part of the tournament earnings, they also earn a decent amount of money from their fellow endorsers. Lance Armstrong, an extraordinary cyclist and one of the most controversial athletes of the contemporary times, earned the 9th place in Forbes list of the world’s richest athletes in 2000, with an income of 28 million.

As Jayson Stark once stated that, ” it’s a unique paragon of the American culture”, with with more than about 21 million participants in the United Staes with a good amount of viewership of MLB, the participants are considered among the highest paid athletes in the contemporary sports world.

Cecil Fielder, an American Baseball player secured the 8th slot in the 1993 Forbes list of the world’s Richest Players with an income of 12.7 million dollars. Alex Rodriguez earned the 7th place in the 2003 list with a net income of 26 million dollars, and again, in 2011 with a total income of 35 million dollars.

ICE HOCKEY:

Ice Hockey is one of the fastest paced physical sport and is also one of the highest paying sports in the world, as the players have earned remarkably huge amounts of income and have secured decent spots in the Forbes list of the world’s Richest Players. One of the brilliant ice hockey players Wayne Gretzky earned the 5th place in the 1994 list with a total income of 13.5 million dollars and once again, earned the 10th place in the 1995 list with a net income of 14.5 millions dollars.  A Canadian Ice Hockey player Joe Sakic was in the 9th place in the 1997 Forbes list with a total income of 17.9 million dollars. And lastly, Sergei Federov, a Russian International Ice Hockey player achieved the 3rd spot in the 1998 list with a total income of 29.8 million dollars.

Played by millions of people worldwide, Tennis is a highly renowned recreational sport. WTA tournaments are considered to be one of the highest paying tournaments in the world as tennis players have often occupied decent spots in the Forbes list of the world’s Richest Players. Andre Agassi made it to the 6th place in the 1992 list with a total income of 11 millions dollars. Jim Courier earned the 9th place in the 1993 with a total income of 12.6 million dollars. Roger Federer achieved the 6th place in the 2008 list with 35 million dollars; in 2010 with a 43 million dollars total income and in 2013 with a total income of 71.5 million dollars.

Legendary footballer David Beckham was in the 8th place in the 2004 Forbes list with a total income of about 28 million dollars and 7th place in the 2005 list with an income of 32.5 million dollars. The Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho made it to the 9th place in the 2007 list with an estimated income of about 31 million dollars. Beckham managed to, yet again, secure a spot for himself in the 2008 list with an income of approximately 50 million dollars. The brilliant Portuguese footballer earned the second place in the 2014 list with an estimated income of 80 million dollars. Lionel Messi also secured the 4th place in the list for the previous year with an income of 64.7 million dollars.

American football is also one of the highest paying sports in the world, along with the others mentioned in the list. Player Joe Montana achieved the 7th place in the 1992 Forbes List with an income of 9.2 million dollars. Deion Sanders secured the 3rd place in the 1995 list with an estimated income of about 22.5 million dollars. Popular NFL player Peyton Manning earned the 3rd place in the 2007 list with a total income of 42 million dollars. Michael Vick achieved the 4th place in the 2005 list with an income of 37.5 million dollars. Yet another renowned NFL star, Tom Brady, was at the 9th place in the 2006 list with an income of about 29 million dollars.

One of the most legendary and most successful golfers, Tiger Woods, has made an appearance in Forbes list about eleven times. He topped the 2002 list with a 69 million dollars income, in 2003 with an income of 78 million dollars, in 2004 with 80.3 million dollars, in the year 2005, with 87 million dollars as his income, in 2006 with an income of 90 million dollars, 100 million dollars income in 2007, in 2008 with a 115 million dollars income, in 2010 with 105 million dollars, in 2011 with 75 million dollars, and once again in 2013 with a total income of  78.1 million dollars. Although, much before Tiger Woods achieved such great heights, golfer Jack Nicholas achieved the 3rd place in the 1994 Forbes list with an income of 14.8 million dollars.

Auto Racing is considered to be on elf the most deadliest, yet one of the most popular sport around the world. it also happens to be one of the highest paying sports in the world. This is one sport that pays on a per-win basis. The risks involved are compensated for by the huge amounts of prize money and quite a few reputed brand endorsement gigs. For the race car drivers driving at the speed a hundred miles an hour, the tiniest of mishandling of the vehicle could result in possible death of not just the driver, but also for the drivers that he might be competing with. One of the most sought after sport around the world, Basketball is governed by the National Basketball Association (NBA)  and was first played in Springfield, United States. The players receive huge amounts of salary from their respective teams, as well as from the brand endorsements that they’re a part of.  With an average income of over 4 million dollars, basketball players earn a lot to even try to lead their teams to a championship. And because of the kind of admiration that the sport receives, and the international viewership of NBA, the players also earn quite a bit based on their star power. Basketball legend Michael Jordan topped the 1992 Forbes list with a 35.9 million dollars income, the 1993 list with a 36 million dollars income, a 30.01 million dollar income in the 1994 list, 43.9 million dollars in 1995, 78.3 million dollars in the 1997 list, and a 69 million dollars income in the 1998 list. Another brilliant basketball player Shaquille O’Neal stood 8th in the 1993 Forbes list with an income of 15.2 million dollars, and yet again in the 1994 list with an income of 16.7 million dollars.

 

Clearly, being professionally involved in any sport can indeed make a person wealthy and famous, which is one of the many major reasons why everyone wants a shot at making a career in sports.
