As is apparent on the field, all football enthusiasts out there believe that Messi is arguably the most talented player to have played the great game of football. His techniques, his terrific passes, and his tremendous creativity are what make him unique in his game. He possesses the ability to tear his opponents apart and take them down, which in turn has led several goalkeepers to believe that Messi’s trouble. However, over the last few years, a handful of keepers have been successful in holding him back, and it will be worth your while to have a look at who these players are:
Bravo has been extraordinary in his performance in the recent years. Keeping in mind his accomplishments with Chile, it’s fairly obvious that he’s a brilliant goalkeeper. He is one of those few keepers who has had the honor of playing alongside Lionel Messi, both as teammates and as opponents. He has, in so many instances, made Messi struggle to score a goal against him. It took Messi a while before he could take Bravo down. In the matches between Chile and Argentina, in October 2007, and October 2008, Bravo has kept 2 clean sheets against Messi. Leo ultimately took him down by scoring 2 goals and breaking the record in a 5-0 win against Real Sociedad in December 2010. Bravo, however, has also impressively silenced the five-time Ballon d’Or winner quite a few other times, counting the 0-0 at the Copa America 2016 final.

This is one name that will never be consigned to oblivion at Manchester United. A highly acclaimed named in the Premier League, and spectacular goalkeeper, Edwin Van Der Sar has earned his name on this list. Among the other keepers on this list, Van Der Sar has also managed to keep Messi at bay in some really critical games. The two of them clashed in the initial stages of UEFA Champions League April 2008. He beat Messi another time wherein Manchester United defeated Barcelona 1-0.

One of the most brilliant players is Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer. He’s no doubt one of the best goalkeepers ever known to the sport. His excellent prowess as a keeper has led him to earn a spot on the podium of Ballon d’Or in 2014. These developments are fairly suggestive of the fact that he’s good at what he does and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to know that he managed to keep rather impressive clean sheets against Lionel Messi. Neuer has had the opportunity to do so on several occasions. Barcelona played Bayern Munich in the semifinals of the Champions League 2013. Bayern outshined Barcelona with a compelling 7-0 win in two legs.
The two went up against each other again, in the World Cup final in 2014 and managed to steer clear of Messi before the duo ultimately clashed in a semifinal match when Barcelona were in a draw against Bayern Munich in 2015.
In the first leg of the match played on May 6th, 2015, Messi fabricated an extraordinary moment when he beat Manuel Neuer with a mindblowing shot from outside the box. Messi tore down the clean sheet record in a noteworthy manner and his second goal was regarded as the league’s best goal of the season.
The latest player to have gone up against Messi is Gianluigi Buffon. This Italian superstar is one of the few goalkeepers who has managed to keep Messi at bay on 3 different occasions. He outclassed Messi with some spectacular saves in the finals of UEFA Champions League, where Barca won 3-1, and another, in the final two legs of previous season’s Champion’s League expulsion of Barcelona in the quarterfinals.
